About Door County
Door County is the most ecologically rich and diverse county in Wisconsin. The county's 300 miles of shoreline interspersed with historic lighthouses and charming fishing villages have attracted generations of tourists seeking a vacation paradise.
The Door Peninsula presents two different faces of nature. The Green Bay coast offers cozy harbors nestled below high escarpment bluffs. The Lake Michigan side provides sandy beaches and inland lakes. The narrow peninsula allows people to make short forays through orchards, forests, and wetlands between the shores of Lake Michigan and the bluffs of Green Bay.
Door County features three state parks, numerous state and local nature preserves and parks, and seven lighthouses. Towns and villages offer shops, restaurants, galleries, music, theater, festivals and events, and history museums. Year-round recreation activities include boating, fishing, exploring nature, hiking, biking, and golfing.
The Door County Coastal Byway is one of three State Scenic Byways in Wisconsin, featuring a 66-mile loop on State Highways 42 and 57.
The moderate climate (cooler summer and warmer winter than inland parts of the state) in Door County is the result of the moderating effect of the buffering waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan that surround the county. As a result, fruit trees grow well here because of the diminished threat of frost in this lakeside climate.
The Niagara Escarpment is the backbone of the Door peninsula, creating the unique features of karst topography, including caves, disappearing streams, and bubbling springs.
